For those of you who like Nine Inch Nails and/or free music:

Nine Inch Nails is releasing their latest studio album, The Slip, for free as MP3s or lossless audio in your format of choice. This is the band's second foray into the free-online distribution method after Ghosts I-IV earlier this year. Trent Reznor, NIN's driving force, also produced rapper Saul Williams's excellent Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, which was released as a free download last year.

Apparently a CD version of the album will be available in a month or two.

I'm listening to it right now and it's good stuff--a little more electronic and less heavy than Year Zero.

What does "lossless audio" mean?

It's uncompressed audio files, basically. When you compress a file to turn it into an MP3, you lose frequencies that are generally outside of audible range for humans. Something like 1% of people can actually hear a difference (or at least they claim to) between an MP3 and a lossless version.

Although you put it in parentheses, I think "or at least they claim to" is the most important part of that sentence.

Well...

That all depends on the bitrate used to encoded the MP3. If a "normal" person can't tell the difference between an MP3 encoded at 64kbps and 192kbps (given a "high quality" source to encode from), then that person needs to have his hearing checked.

Re: Well...
I agree with this comment. I've found that 160/192 is the threshold for me. I can't tell the difference between 192 and 320 most of the time.

Re: Well...
Yeah--I should've said a high-quality MP3.

In this case, they are using M4A lossless compression for the CD-quality files:
